Eating right after appendix surgery is essential to get back on your feet quickly. Surgery after appendicitis is a major operation. Your stomach needs time to recover from this. Read here how you can help him with the right food.
Eat right after appendix surgery
After appendectomy, you need to be extra careful about what you eat. On the first day after the procedure, it is imperative that you take care of your stomach. In the following days you can then start with bland food.
- Immediately after the operation, you are usually fed artificially via an infusion. If you feel particularly well after the procedure, you can drink tea.
- You can then eat soup the day after the appendectomy. You may also be able to start with a light diet.
- You will receive this during your three to five day stay in the hospital. Here you will be served, for example, clear broth, rusks, pumpkin and yoghurt.
- Gradually you may then eat solid food. Notice how you feel after eating solid foods.
- The most important thing is to drink lots of fluids. Eight to ten glasses a day is a good amount of water for your body.
Diet at home after appendectomy
So that your body can continue to recover from the appendicitis that you have survived, you should always ensure a balanced diet in the first few weeks after the operation. Too much fat and sugar will not do your stomach any good.
- You should therefore avoid sugar, white flour and greasy and fried foods.
- Even red meat and sausages in general and eggs will not do your stomach and intestines well.
- Alcohol and nicotine consumption after an appendectomy should also be avoided.
- You should also stay away from other irritants that could, for example, bloat or otherwise irritate your stomach. These include, for example, cabbage and beans, as these cause gas and bloating. Also avoid eating particularly spicy food, which irritates the intestinal mucosa.
- Cooked chicken, rice, yoghurt and rusks are therefore more suitable on the menu after an appendectomy.
- You can then go for a relaxing walk so that you can digest the food well.
- Nuts also promote healthy digestion. Garlic has an anti-inflammatory effect and is therefore ideal as a spice after appendix surgery.
- In itself, the consumption of plenty of fruit and vegetables is beneficial after the procedure. Both contain plenty of fiber, which is good for digestion and bowel movements.
- Even after you get home, it’s important to continue drinking plenty of fluids. It has to be at least two liters a day.
