If you want to enjoy pumpkins out of season, you can easily freeze them. What needs to be considered and how it works, we will show you in this practical tip.
Freeze pumpkin: Different ways
If you freeze the pumpkin, it will keep for about four to six months. However, you should always keep in mind what you want to prepare from the pumpkin later. After thawing, the consistency of the fruit changes, so it can no longer be processed as usual later.
- If you want to bake a pumpkin pie later, you can grate the pumpkin before freezing. Now put everything in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer.
- You can also freeze the squash whole. To do this, remove everything that you cannot eat later and put it in the freezer compartment together with the freezer bag.
- On the other hand, it saves a lot of space if you cut the fruit into bite-sized pieces beforehand. This way you can better process the pumpkin later and even eat it directly.
- Make sure, however, that the pumpkin pieces are not crushed. Otherwise, after defrosting, they will taste very watery and lose their aroma.
- Important: Most pumpkins have very hard skin. This is not poisonous, but hardly edible. Only the skin of the Hokkaido is soft and edible.
Freeze pumpkin as a puree – that’s how it works
Especially if you want to cook pumpkin soup later, it is a good idea to puree the fruit before freezing. Read more about this in the following points.
- Cut the pumpkin into pieces in advance. These should be about two inches long and wide.
- Now put the pieces in a pot of boiling water for about 15 to 20 minutes.
- The shell can then be easily removed. However, it is best to wait until the pumpkin has cooled slightly.
- Now puree the pumpkin pieces to an even pulp. Use a hand blender or a regular blender to do this.
- Finally, fill the mixture into a freezer bag and freeze.
