If you have bought too many oranges, you can freeze the fruit. They have a long shelf life when frozen. But that only applies if you follow a few rules.
Freezing oranges: instructions
Orange can be frozen and used again later. For it to be edible after defrosting, observe the following rules:
- Freezing: Freeze an orange without the peel. If you freeze an orange with the peel, the fruit will go mushy after thawing. Therefore, wash and peel the orange beforehand.
- Remove the zest from the orange. You should also completely remove the remains of the peel.
- Divide the orange into individual pieces. Spread them out on a cutting board or baking sheet. Put it in your freezer overnight. Make sure your freezer is at least -18 degrees. Oranges keep best at this temperature.
- Pre-freezing is necessary so that the orange pieces do not stick together.
- Take the orange out of the freezer the next day. Place the pieces in a freezer bag. Squeeze out the air. Put them back in the freezer. Here the fruit can be kept fresh for up to six months.
- Thaw: Thaw the orange again by placing the freezer bag or individual orange slices in the fridge overnight.
- You can use the thawed oranges for a smoothie or a fruit salad.
