Grandma's chard stew

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1 kg chard
  • 600 g potatoes (peeled, quartered)
  • 250 g onion(s) (chopped)
  • 3 garlic cloves (chopped)
  • 50 g bacon, fat (diced)
  • ½ liter vegetable broth
  • Salt and pepper, black
  • 4 sausages (Bockwurst or Mettwurst)
  • nutmeg, smoked salt

Instructions

Working time approx. 20 minutes; Total time approx. 20 minutes

Trim the stems from the chard, removing the center rib if necessary. Cut the chard into fine strips, wash thoroughly, and drain. Fry the bacon in a large pot. Sauté the onions and garlic until golden brown. Add the potatoes and cover with the vegetable stock. Cook over medium heat in a covered pot for 15 minutes. Add the chard and cook over moderate heat for another 10 minutes. Then mash everything with a potato masher. Season the stew with salt, pepper, a little freshly grated nutmeg, and smoked salt. Slice the sausages and warm them in the hot stew.
