Growing Mustard: You Have to Pay Attention to This

Growing mustard: you have to pay attention to this

There is actually not much to consider when growing mustard:

  • Since the mustard likes a lot of soil and containers, you only have to make sure that the location gets enough sun. However, mustard only likes some sun and should not always be exposed to direct sunlight. So you can’t go wrong with a semi-shady spot that gets some sun from time to time.
  • You can sow the mustard between April and October.
  • If you sow the plant outside, be sure to cover the seeds with about 2 cm of soil. Otherwise, birds and other small animals can use it.
  • You should always keep the seeds slightly moist but never drown them. Too much water is not good for the mustard plant.
  • Note: You should not sow mustard where other cruciferous plants were the year before. In addition to cabbage, this also includes cress or, for example, rocket. That’s because cruciferous vegetables sap important nutrients from the soil and infect it with a soil fungus.

This is how you should care for mustard

Mustard is a very undemanding plant:

  • In addition to the above-mentioned location for the plant, you only have to worry about watering.
  • Mustard loves it when you keep it moist at all times. This is the best way for it to grow and thrive.
  • But be careful, because mustard can grow up to 2 meters high. So make sure you have enough space.
  • You do not have to fertilize the plant. You can of course use your household compost if you also use it for your garden.
