Hood height – not too high, not too low
The extractor hood needs a suitable distance from the cooker. If you hang it too low, you will regularly bang your head on it or adopt an awkward working position. If you hang it too high, the vapors will spread throughout the room – the hood will fail its purpose. An important factor when installing is the type and size of your cooker. All distances refer to the distance between the hob surface and the lower edge of the extractor hood.
- Place the hood at (at least) about 60 cm over an electric or glass ceramic cooker.
- Gas stoves are more powerful, which is why the steam rises faster. Therefore, choosing a slightly larger distance, (at least) 65 cm to about 90 cm is the guide value here.
- Also, make sure that the extractor hood is slightly larger than the stove. The vapor that does not rise quite vertically due to drafts is also trapped by this overhang.
- Manufacturers specify a minimum distance from the hob for their hoods. This should be determined according to the operating instructions and not fall below. Otherwise, there is a risk of fire. Therefore, always use the manufacturer’s information first.
- The performance of the hood also plays a role. The higher it is, the further up you can tend to attach the hood.
- In general, the range for the height of the hood should be in the range about 60 to 100 cm above the stove.
- Another tip: adjust the height of the hood to the needs of the person who will be spending the most time in the kitchen. The right height saves long-term frustration when cooking and ensures an ergonomic posture.
