Herring Food to Our Liking

The perfect herring food to our liking recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.

  • 3 packet Herring fillets = 6 fillets
  • 100 gs of 10% Greek yogurt
  • 2 Tablespoon = 60 grams Creme fraiche Cheese
  • 2 Tablespoon = 60 grams Mayonnaise 80% fat
  • 2 tablespoon Cucumber stock
  • 40 g small Pickles
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 diced Apple Breaburn
  • 1 tablespoon Freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 small Dried chili peppers
  1. Rinse the matjes fillets with cold water and pat dry again thoroughly. Core the apple and cut into fine pieces, drizzle immediately with the lemon juice, finely dice the onions and the gherkins.
  2. For the marinade, stir the yogurt with créme fraiche, mayonnaise and cucumber stock until smooth and fold in the cucumber, onion and apple pieces with the chili peppers.
  3. Now layer everything in a sealable container: first a little marinade, then half of the herring fillets, again marinade, cover the remaining herring fillets and everything with the remaining marinade. Cap the jar and let it steep in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours.
  4. I served simple, mild fried potatoes with a garnish of tomatoes and onion strips with my herrings.
