The star fruit, also known as carambola, originally comes from Southeast Asia and is now cultivated in many tropical climates. It has a slightly sour-sweet taste. After washing, the entire star fruit is edible – including the peel.
For example, you can slice them crosswise to make small stars that you can use to garnish desserts or drinks. The sweet and sour taste of the star fruit also goes well in fruit salad, but also with hearty meat dishes if you cook a chutney with it, for example. Starfruit can also be processed into compotes and jams.
The star fruit, also called “tree gooseberry”, should have a certain amount of yellow when harvested. Star fruits belong to the so-called non-climacteric fruits and only slightly ripen after harvesting.
