How Do Chestnuts Taste?

Chestnuts are a typical winter food. Sweet chestnut fruits are boiled, roasted, or baked. Raw they taste rather tart, cooked they are much more aromatic and have a nutty, slightly sweet taste.

You can enjoy the chestnuts on their own or as a side dish, for example with hearty meat dishes. In principle, chestnuts are suitable as a side dish substitute for potatoes. Other types of preparation are, for example, chestnut soup or chestnut puree. Compared to other nuts, chestnuts have relatively little fat, but plenty of fiber, which is why they are very filling.

Chestnuts are commercially available fresh from September to March. Chestnuts come mainly and in large quantities from the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Productions can be found in France, Spain, Italy, and Greece, and to a lesser extent in warmer regions of Germany, for example at Lake Constance. Alternatively, peeled and pre-cooked chestnuts are offered in cans or vacuum packs.
