How Do You Eat Jackfruit?

Jackfruit has been popular as a meat substitute for some time, especially in western countries. In its countries of origin in Asia and South America, it is popular as a dessert or snack.

These differences – i.e. the use of both sweet and savory – are related to the degree of ripeness of the fruit. The flesh of unripe fruits is firmer and can be processed like vegetables, i.e. boiled, fried, or steamed. If you pickle it with intensive spices, it takes on the taste accordingly and can be used wonderfully as a meat substitute.

When the fruit is ripe, the flesh then becomes softer and sweeter. Then the jackfruit can be eaten like fruit, but you can also make fruit puree or ice cream on it.

Incidentally, the kernels can also be used: they can be dried and roasted, and ground into flour. In India, for example, thin flatbread is baked from it.

What can you eat from the jackfruit?

An unripe jackfruit provides about 30 calories per 100 grams and is high in fiber. It contains appreciable amounts of vitamin C, beta-carotene, magnesium, calcium and potassium, but almost no protein and little iron. The white seeds are also edible, they taste similar to chestnuts.

How do you prepare jackfruit?

  • The jackfruit secretes a sticky juice.
  • Oil the cutting board and knife well.
  • Cut open the hard jackfruit with the knife.
  • Then tear them open with your hands.
  • Remove the seeds from the jackfruit.
  • You can remove the pulp pockets with your hands.

The taste is neutral to slightly sour. The kernels are soft and the size of a pea. The unripe jackfruit is commercially available in jars or preserves – usually in brine. There is also the meat substitute cut into small pieces, filled into bags, and shrink-wrapped.
