How to Clean Blinds Without Removing them From the Window, and Not to Break Anything: Homeowner’s Tips and Tricks

Those housewives who have at least once tried to clean blinds know how difficult this procedure is. Vertical or horizontal, fabric or aluminum – each type of blind requires special treatment.

With what and how to wash blinds easily – detergents

Before you start cleaning, decide on the cleaning agent you will use. There are several options:

  • A solution of baby or laundry soap (2-3 tablespoons per 3 liters of water);
  • dish detergent (1 tablespoon per 3 liters of water);
  • washing gel (1 tablespoon per 10 liters of water);
  • Glass cleaner.

You will also need gloves, a spray gun, microfiber cloths or a dry soft cloth, a dishwashing sponge, and an antistatic spray.

How to wash vertical blinds

First, let’s understand that lamellae come in different materials – fabric, aluminum, wood, or bamboo. There is no one-size-fits-all methodology unless you want to ruin the design – each individual material needs its own approach.

They should not be washed at all – under the influence of moisture, lamellae swell and deform. It is better to clean the blinds with a dry rag or vacuum cleaner, having previously closed them completely. Then open and wipe each individual component of the lamellae with a rag again. Finally, spray the construction with an antistatic spray to keep dust from settling on it.

How to Clean Fabric Blinds

If you want to clean the blinds qualitatively and not see afterwards the streaks from the detergent, it is better to remove the construction. Gently remove the dust with a vacuum cleaner, and then take the fabric blinds to the dry cleaner. If this option is not available to you, you can wash them yourself.

Put the rolled-up lamellae into a basin with a prepared detergent solution and leave to soak for 10-15 minutes. Then load the roll into a laundry bag or an old pillowcase and put it in the machine. Wash the blinds at a temperature no higher than 30 ℃ on a gentle cycle and without spinning. Once washed, leave the blinds to dry flat.

If you can’t remove the blinds, move them to a half-open position and wipe off the dust with a dry cloth. Use a spray gun to apply detergent, wipe with a sponge, and then a microfiber cloth. Take care not to leave any streaks.

Use the same pattern to clean blinds made of plastic or metal.

How to wash horizontal blinds without taking them off the window.

Horizontal construction lamellae are also divided into several types, depending on the material from which they are made.

How to clean blinds made of fabric

Horizontal fabric blinds, as a rule, cannot be removed, because the construction does not allow it. And even if you can, you will spend a lot of time on it, so it is easier to wash them on the window.

Close the lamellae in “maximum sun protection” mode, and wipe off the dust with a dry rag. Then open and wipe each lamella with detergent. If you find old stains, use an eraser or soap solution. Be careful not to damage the fabric.

How to wash plastic or metal blinds easily

If you can remove the construction – great, this is the fastest and most convenient way. Close the blinds, wipe off the dust, and change the position of the slats several times to thoroughly remove all the dirt. Remove blinds from their fixtures and soak them in a soapy solution for 20-30 minutes, then thoroughly wipe them with a sponge and rinse them with water. Do the same with the curtain rod. Do not forget to wipe the clean construction with a napkin, otherwise, there will be stains.

If you can’t remove the blinds, close them, wipe off the dust, and change the position of the lamellae several times to thoroughly remove all the dirt. Then spray a cleaning solution with a spray gun and wait 15 to 20 minutes for the dirt to soak in. Wipe with a sponge, open the louvers, and wipe each blade separately. Rinse clean with clean water and treat with an antistatic after drying.
