Iceberg lettuce has a light green, round head of lettuce. Its leaves are crisp and fresh, some are slightly curled at the ends and lie close to the head. Iceberg lettuce is 95% water.
Origin
Iceberg lettuce loves a mild climate and originally comes from North America. This is probably where its name comes from, because in the past the lettuce was produced on the west coast of the USA and then transported by train to the east coast. It was stored under ice so that it reached its destination fresh.
Season
Iceberg lettuce is commercially available all year round. From November to April there are almost exclusively imported goods. From May to October, the trade is largely supplied with iceberg lettuce from German production.
Taste
Iceberg lettuce tastes mild and is very refreshing due to its high water content. Even after preparation, it still has its crunchy bite.
Use
Iceberg lettuce is particularly popular raw and plucked into bite-sized pieces in mixed salads or whole leaves as a crisp, fresh base for sandwiches. Its neutral taste goes well with many dressings, salad dressings, and bread toppings. Lightly fried, it is a great side dish for hearty dishes. Its taste is then reminiscent of spinach.
Storage/shelf life
Wrapped in cling film, iceberg lettuce will keep in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator for about a week. If the stalk is removed beforehand, the shelf life is extended by a few days.
