Iceberg lettuce contains a lot of water and is therefore low in calories. Nevertheless, it provides various important nutrients. Iceberg lettuce is rich in beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, and also contains relevant amounts of folic acid and the mineral potassium.
100 grams of iceberg lettuce provide just 13 kcal. It contains 3.6 mg of beta-carotene. The provitamin is converted by the body into vitamin A, which helps maintain normal vision. In addition, iceberg lettuce provides an average of 53 micrograms of valuable folic acid per 100 grams. The original North American type of lettuce also contains 175 mg of potassium. Nowadays, iceberg lettuce or iceberg lettuce is grown in large quantities in southern Europe, mainly grown in Spain, during the winter period. Iceberg lettuce from German production comes onto the market in summer.
In order not to wash out any of the valuable nutrients, the leaves of the iceberg lettuce should only be chopped up after washing. Iceberg lettuce is popular because of its crunchy consistency, which conveys a special freshness.
