A vegan diet is not automatically the same as a diet. Because even with a diet without animal products, it is possible to eat large amounts of energy-rich foods. However, if you pay attention to a balanced diet and enough exercise parallel to the vegan menu, a vegan diet is well suited for losing weight.
Due to the limited menu, vegans often deal with their food much more intensively and eat more consciously and balanced. Another factor that can contribute to weight loss is that vegan products are not always available everywhere. In addition, consistent vegans are less often tempted to reach for snacks or sweets. Cutting out high-fat meat dishes, milk chocolate, and many types of fast food and convenience foods also results in lower intake of energy, sugar, and high-fat foods.
Many components of a balanced diet are vegan per se: The DGE recommends that the daily diet should consist largely of foods of plant origin. This includes five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables per day as well as potatoes, wholemeal bread, rice, and pasta. In addition, there is a proportion of animal products that vegans have to replace with plant-based protein sources. The mix plate can also be easily made vegan. Fruit, vegetables, and grain products are simply supplemented with vegan protein suppliers such as soy products, nuts, seeds, or legumes.
However, not all vegan foods are nutrient-dense and low in energy. Vegan ready-made products and desserts are now also available that are just as high in fat and sugar as the non-vegan alternatives. Many types of white bread or pasta are vegan, but in excess, they provide large amounts of carbohydrates that are quickly available to the body and counteract weight loss. If you want to lose weight vegan, you can cook yourself with fresh ingredients, for example. This makes it easier to keep track of the components and energy content of the meal.
The basic rule is: if you want to lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you take in. This calorie requirement depends on body type, gender, state of health, and life situation of the respective person. Even as part of a vegan diet, for successful weight loss you should focus primarily on foods with a high nutrient density that are rich in proteins and fiber. It is important to drink a lot, preferably at least 1.5 liters of unsweetened beverages a day. In addition to such a balanced diet, it is beneficial for weight loss to exercise regularly. By building muscle, the daily basal metabolic rate of calories can be increased, which also promotes weight loss.
