Is Cane Sugar Better than Regular Sugar?

Spread the love

I often see raw cane sugar as an ingredient, especially on organic products. Is it healthier than other sugars or what is the difference?

Raw (cane) sugar is no healthier than other types of sugar. Although it has a slightly higher mineral content than white sugar, this only comes into play with large amounts of sugar, which in turn are undesirable. Raw cane sugar is not completely cleaned cane sugar, which is why it has the brown color. With multiple washes, each sugar will turn white.

What is the difference between cane sugar and our household sugar (refined sugar)? Cane sugar is obtained from sugar cane, table sugar from sugar beets.

Sugar cane grows in tropical areas and accounts for 74% of all sugar production. In contrast, the sugar beets for (household) sugar production are from domestic cultivation.

Cane sugar is also available from fair and organic sources, so it is often found in organic products. In the meantime, however, there is also organic household sugar made from sugar beet.

By the way: not all brown sugar is also raw sugar. The brown color can also be caused by caramelization of the sugar syrup, resulting in a light caramel taste.
