Cinnamon and health – you should pay attention to that

Cinnamon is extracted from the bark of the cinnamon tree just as it was hundreds of years ago. In the past, only the bark of the Ceylon cinnamon tree was used for cinnamon production and Ceylon cinnamon still makes a valuable contribution to health.

  • Ceylon cinnamon contains health-promoting essential oils, numerous antioxidants, and phytochemicals. In addition, Ceylon cinnamon contains many healthy minerals such as iron and magnesium, calcium and potassium as well as manganese.
  • Due to its ingredients, Ceylon cinnamon is said to regulate blood fat levels and lower blood sugar. In painful diseases such as arthrosis, the spice is said to have an anti-inflammatory and pain-reducing effect. Whether and to what extent the effect of cinnamon actually has a soothing effect is still being investigated.

A warning is given against cinnamon cassia

With cinnamon cassia, it is completely different. The spice, also known as Chinese cinnamon, often contains a fairly high concentration of coumarin and this can even be harmful to health.

  • Coumarin often causes severe headaches and discomfort. In addition, too much coumarin can lead to liver inflammation and even severe liver damage. Scientists are also investigating the extent to which coumarin promotes the formation of tumors.
  • Due to its negative effects on health, both the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment and consumer advice centers warn against consuming too much cinnamon cassia.
  • However, the warning does not only apply to the spice itself. During reviews of Christmas cookies containing cinnamon, an alarmingly high percentage of coumarin was sometimes found, which is already classified as harmful to health.
