Is Expired Mozzarella Still Good? Here’s How to Find Out

Is expired mozzarella still good? Here’s how to find out

If the best-before date of your mozzarella has passed, you do not necessarily have to dispose of it.

  • Your mozzarella can be eaten for at least 3 days after the expiration date.
  • Inflated packaging hides putrefactive bacteria and other harmful organisms. Therefore, you should dispose of swollen packaging immediately without opening it.
  • If the package is not yet inflated, open it and smell the contents.
  • If you smell a sour or bitter smell, the cheese is no longer edible.
  • If you see mould, the cheese also belongs in the trash.
  • If there is a smeary film on the mozzarella, the cheese is also spoiled.
  • If you haven’t noticed any smell, but the first bite tastes sour, sharp or tingles on the tongue, the mozzarella is ready for the residual waste.
  • As a general rule, discard the cheese if it smells strange. It doesn’t matter whether the expiry date has already passed or not.
Buffalo mozzarella should still have a slightly liquid core.
