Is It Harmful If You Swallow Chewing Gum?

Anyone who accidentally swallows chewing gum does not have to worry about health problems. For example, it cannot get stuck in the digestive tract because it is always surrounded by a film of moisture that prevents the sticky mass from sticking. Healthy people excrete the chewing gum they swallowed without having any symptoms in the meantime.

Only if you swallow an extremely large amount of chewing gum within a short period of time can digestive and swallowing problems occur at some point. With normal consumption, however, there is nothing to worry about if you accidentally swallow the gum every now and then.

However, chewing gum can cause bloating because you swallow a lot of air when you chew it. Sugar-free chewing gum with sweeteners such as xylitol or sorbitol can also have a laxative effect if consumed very heavily.

So swallowing a single piece of gum isn’t a bad thing. With larger amounts, however, there is a risk that the plastic mass in the intestine will cause digestive problems such as abdominal pain or constipation.
