This shows the degree of ripeness of passion fruit.

  • Maracuja (forma flavicarpa) is often confused with passion fruit (forma edulis). Although they look different, they both belong to the genus Passiflora.
  • Visually, the light green to yellowish passion fruit is about twice the size of the reddish-purple passion fruit.
  • You can tell how ripe a passion fruit is by the color of its skin and its weight.
  • If the skin is still green, the fruit was harvested unripe.
  • Very ripe passion fruit are clearly colored yellow.
  • Depending on their size, they feel quite heavy.
  • Too light fruits are a sign that they have already dried up, even if the peel is yellow.
  • Compared to the passion fruit, the passion fruit has a firmer fruiting body. The degree of softness is therefore not a clear indicator of maturity.
