Is Using Parchment Paper Harmful?

Spread the love

Hello, I use baking paper to bake and heat up pizza, rolls and fries. Can the coating of the baking paper be dangerous for me?

Most baking paper these days is coated with silicone so nothing sticks. When used properly, the use of (coated) baking paper is not harmful.
Baking paper is one of the food commodities and is subject to corresponding EU-wide regulations (Regulation (EC) 1935/2004). According to this, it must not contain any components or release them into food that could endanger human health.

The Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety regularly examines baking paper. There was no cause for complaint in either 2018 or 2019/2020. Ökotest examined a total of 19 baking papers in November 2021, including 18 coated ones. Here, too, there were no abnormalities in terms of questionable ingredients.

If you use baking paper, you should stick to the maximum temperature (220°C) specified by the manufacturer. At higher temperatures, undesirable substances can form and transfer from the baking paper to the food. Permissible maximum amounts of these substances may then be exceeded.
Furthermore, we advise you to replace the baking paper at the latest when it becomes brittle or badly discolored. In addition, you should not put the baking paper in the oven while it is preheating.

Due to the silicone coating, used baking paper belongs in the residual waste. Although some suppliers advertise that their baking paper is “compostable”, you should not dispose of it in organic waste or compost.
