The jackfruit – all information
Here’s what you need to know about jackfruit:
- Jackfruits grow in the tropics.
- A single fruit can weigh over 30 kilos.
- If the ripe fruit is cut open, a milky, sticky juice escapes.
- Like the rubber tree, the jackfruit belongs to the mulberry family.
- In its homeland, jackfruit is mainly eaten sweet – for example as a dessert or snack.
- It has similar nutritional values to potatoes – but a potato has significantly more fiber and protein than a jackfruit. In addition, jackfruit contains more carbohydrates than meat.
The jackfruit as an alternative to meat
In western countries, jackfruit has been used as a meat substitute for some time.
- It is harvested raw and processed to obtain a meat-like consistency.
- The raw jackfruit is pickled in brine. It is almost tasteless itself and can therefore be marinated in such a way that it tastes strongly of meat.
- You can find unripe jackfruit online or in Indian grocery stores to use as a meat substitute. First, you have to soften the fruit.
- Be sure to use organic quality.
Benefits of Jackfruit
Jackfruit has some advantages over tofu and seitan:
- It is gluten-free.
- It is not grown using genetic engineering.
- She is low in fat.
- In contrast to soy products, the consistency of jackfruit is very reminiscent of meat.
