How is macadamia oil made?

Refined oil is obtained through extraction and then cleaned of unwanted components. It tastes more neutral, and has a longer shelf life – but also contains less effective ingredients than cold-pressed oil. However, cold-pressed macadamia oil also has a disadvantage: it spoils relatively quickly and therefore only has a limited shelf life.

This is due to the unsaturated fatty acids it contains. To counteract this and to increase the shelf life, natural vitamin E is added to the oil.

What ingredients are found in macadamia oil?

Macadamia oil has a high proportion of palmitoleic acid as well as a-linolenic acid, oleic acid, myristic acid, stearic acid, and linoleic acid. Most of these are healthy fats. These support the organism in many ways. Macadamia oil is also high in vitamin B and vitamin E, as well as sodium, phosphorus, iron, and calcium.

Why you should dose macadamia oil carefully

Macadamia oil is considered very healthy – but for a very specific reason, you should be more economical with the dosage. The nut oil is very high in calories – 100 grams of macadamia oil has a whopping 879 calories.

Macadamia Oil for the kitchen

Macadamia oil has several potential uses. One of them is the use in the kitchen. Due to its nutty taste, it is ideal for refining salads or other dishes.

However, you should be careful when frying – due to its smoke point, which is around 150 degrees, it is not suitable for hot searing. However, if you want to fry at a low level, you can use it with caution.

Health Benefits of Macadamia Oil

How macadamia oil affects health has not yet been sufficiently proven. One of the few studies that have dealt with this topic so far was carried out by a Brazilian research team from São Paulo. Her finding: With a high-fat diet, macadamia oil can lower insulin levels and has an anti-inflammatory effect.

However, the tests were only performed on mice. However, the health-promoting effect of macadamia oil on the human body has not yet been sufficiently proven.

Prophylaxis against diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

Macadamia oil has a high proportion of palmitoleic acid. This monounsaturated fatty acid is said to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and also counteract diabetes. Here, too, the effects have not yet been sufficiently researched to make a clear statement.

Macadamia oil as skincare

Macadamia oil is a popular skincare oil. The ingredients of the oil support the skin in renewal and regeneration, work against inflammation, and care for it. The oil is a wonderful moisturizer and can be applied directly to the skin as it absorbs very quickly.

There are also ready-made products that already contain macadamia oil. These include creams, shower gels, washing lotions, and bath additives. Macadamia oil can also be used on its own as a massage oil.

Macadamia oil for hair care

The ends of the hair in particular can benefit from macadamia oil: rub them in with a few drops of oil and leave it on overnight. In the morning, you simply wash off the oil with a care shampoo. Many shampoos and hair care products already contain macadamia oil.

Criticism of macadamia oil

Particularly environmentally conscious people repeatedly criticize the use of macadamia oil. The reason: the nut grows mainly in Australia, Kenya, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and New Zealand. This ensures extremely long transport routes and a poor ecological balance.

Those who value sustainability could find an alternative in the oils of other plants, such as walnuts – these are also harvested in local latitudes and therefore have a better ecological balance.

What to look out for when buying

When buying macadamia oil, you should look for an organic seal. This guarantees that the oil was produced in the best possible quality and without pesticides. Those who value sustainability and fair trade should also pay attention to a fair trade seal.
