Make cough drops yourself – ingredients and tools

For our cough drops, we use sage, an old home remedy for coughs and hoarseness. For this you need the following ingredients:

  • 10g fresh sage leaves or 5g dried sage leaves
  • 100 grams of sugar
  • cooking pot
  • baking tray
  • baking paper
  • cooking spoon + teaspoon
  • cellophane wraps

Preparation of sage cough drops

Soothing sage candies help with coughs. Below we will tell you how to do it yourself:

  1. First, wash the fresh sage herb and then dry it using kitchen towels.
  2. Then pluck the individual leaves from the stems and chop them into very small pieces.
  3. The dried leaves should be ground into a very small powder. A mortar can help you with this.
  4. Now put the sugar in a small saucepan and let the sugar caramelize over medium heat. The sugar should not turn too brown, otherwise, it will taste bitter.
  5. Now add the crushed sage leaves to the sugar mass and mix the ingredients with a wooden spoon.
  6. Then take the saucepan off the stove and let the sugar mixture drip onto the baking tray lined with baking paper. Alternatively, you can also let the mass cool down briefly and then place small heaps on the baking paper with the help of a spoon.

Rolling and wrapping candies by hand

If you would like to enjoy the sweets in the form of balls, put the cooled mass in the palm of your hand.

  • Then use both hands to roll the mixture into a ball and place it back on the baking sheet to cool.
  • Once you have rolled all of the candies into balls, wrap them individually in foil.
  • For storage, put the sweets in a sealable container and store them in a cool place. As a result, the sweets have a shelf life of about half a year.
