Make Powdered Sugar Yourself – That’s How It Works

Here’s how you can make powdered sugar yourself

If you notice while baking that you don’t have any more icing sugar at home, you can easily make it yourself. That’s how it works:

  1. All you need is conventional white table sugar and a stand mixer or immersion blender. If you have a coffee grinder at home, you can use that too. Brown cane sugar is also suitable for making icing sugar – but the consistency will not be as fine.
  2. Put the table sugar in the blender or coffee grinder and let the devices grind until the sugar is as fine as powdered sugar.
  3. If you want to use a hand blender, put the sugar in a tall container. Place a cloth around the blender and over the opening of the jar so that the sugar does not form dust. Now puree the sugar until it is very fine.
  4. If your homemade powdered sugar contains small lumps, grind it one more time. Moisture can also be to blame if the sugar forms lumps.
  5. If you add some cornstarch to the homemade powdered sugar, you’ll lock in the moisture and make it last longer.
