Make your own French spice mix: herbs from Provence

Herbs de Provence is the classic among spice mixtures.

  • The DIY mixture is quite easy to make yourself, since all the herbs you need grow without any problems in our climate. The herbs must be dried before mixing. There are several methods you can use to dry herbs. In another article, we present the different ways.
  • For the basic recipe of the classic spice mixture, you need a tablespoon each of oregano, rosemary, and savory, and a teaspoon each of thyme and basil.
  • However, this basic recipe can be extended as desired. If you like, you can add chervil, basil, lavender, tarragon, sage, or lovage.

DIY Swiss spice mix: Ticino herbs

The Swiss also have a typical mixture of spices for dishes from the canton of Ticino.

  • The Ticino spice mixture refines many vegetable dishes and belongs in every minestrone.
  • Ticino herbs are a mixture of one and a half teaspoons each of dried onions, rosemary, and paprika powder. Mix together a teaspoon each of oregano, basil, parsley, celery, and pepper. Also, add half a teaspoon each of marjoram and coriander.
