Melting Butter: Key Facts

Butter is available for purchase in different varieties. Not all are suitable for cooking.

  • Always use real butter and no light products.
  • There are many additives in the reduced-fat products that are not suitable for heating.
  • Because butter is mostly fat and water, butter burns easily if heated too high.
  • So don’t let the butter get too hot.

Melt butter in a saucepan

  • Put the required amount of butter in a saucepan.
  • Melt the butter over low heat, stirring, until completely melted.
  • To clarify the butter, you can skim off the foam with a ladle.

Melt butter in a water bath

  • To melt the butter in a water bath, put water in a saucepan and let it boil.
  • Put the butter in a smaller saucepan and place it in the boiling water.
  • Once the butter has melted, remove the pot.
  • Again, you can lift off the foam with a ladle.

Melt butter in the microwave

  • Put the required amount of butter in a plastic bowl.
  • Melt the butter in the microwave on the lowest setting for up to 2 minutes.
  • It is best to do this in 30-second increments until the butter has completely melted.
