Milk Thistle – Effect and Application of The Medicinal Plant

Milk thistle: The healthy effect lies in the fruit of the medicinal plant

Even in ancient Greece, doctors knew about the health effects of milk thistle fruit on certain diseases.

  • Above all, the plant has a detoxifying effect by shielding the liver cells from cell toxins. The regenerative, i.e. relaxing, effects on liver cells are also known. In this context, you can read about the causes and symptoms of fatty liver with us.
  • In addition, the medicinal plant stimulates bile formation and has a slightly laxative effect. This makes it easier to remove toxins from the body.
  • However, the milk thistle oil is not responsible for the protective effect. The active ingredient is called silymarin and is found in the fruits of the plant.
  • Drugs with this active ingredient are used in intensive care medicine when it comes to treating death cap poisoning, which severely damages the liver.
  • The medicinal plant also contains other flavinoids, which are said to have anti-inflammatory, blood circulation-enhancing, diuretic, and antispasmodic effects.
  • Milk thistle is not only used to strengthen the liver or to treat damage to the organ. The medicinal herb is also used for psoriasis, migraines, and varicose veins as well as for gastrointestinal complaints.

This is how you use the healthy effects of the plant

There are ready-made milk thistle preparations to take, but you can also use the medicinal herb as a tea.

  • If you suffer from bloating or flatulence, prepare milk thistle tea. Pour 150 ml of boiling water over one or two heaped teaspoons and let the tea steep for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Drink the freshly prepared tea three times a day, preferably half an hour before meals.
  • When buying the tea, make sure that it is the dried fruit of the medicinal plant, as this contains most of the healthy active ingredients.
  • You should refrain from using milk thistle during pregnancy and breastfeeding. So far, there have been no adequate studies on possible harmful effects.
