MSM – The Substance Against Arthrosis

MSM stands for organic sulfur and, according to current knowledge, has extremely positive effects, especially in patients suffering from arthrosis or in athletes. Whether it is pain in the joints or even limited joint functions – with MSM these complaints can be forgotten. MSM inhibits joint inflammation and increases joint mobility. In addition, under the influence of MSM, the body can much more easily replace destroyed cells and repair damaged tissue structures. In short: MSM massively promotes the healing of the musculoskeletal system.

MSM – A natural substance for the joints

MSM is an organic sulfur compound that also occurs naturally in the human body and is of great importance to it. With a low-sulfur diet – it is assumed – the risk of joint diseases such as e.g. B. Osteoarthritis.

Since MSM is actually found in almost all foods, it doesn’t seem to be too difficult to get enough organic sulfur. However, due to the food processing that is common today, a large part of the naturally occurring sulfur is lost, so an additional intake of MSM in the form of food supplements can make sense in some cases.

In this way, MSM can compensate for a lack of sulfur in the body. But not only that! MSM has a downright therapeutic effect because it has an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving effect – especially when it comes to musculoskeletal disorders. Therefore, MSM is also a helpful remedy for athletes.

MSM for athletes

MSM supports the regeneration of muscles and joints. It also has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, so sports injuries and sore muscles heal much faster under the influence of MSM.

All of these properties make organic sulfur not only interesting for athletes but of course also for all people (and animals) who have to struggle with joint problems, e.g. B. with arthrosis or with carpal tunnel syndrome.

MSM against osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a widespread chronic joint disease. It is usually referred to as age-related wear and tear that you just have to come to terms with. In naturopathy, however, there are many ways in which arthrosis can be alleviated. MSM is one of them!

In the case of arthrosis, MSM provides significant pain relief and improves mobility without the side effects that are usually associated with regular painkillers and rheumatism drugs.

MSM is not a chemically manufactured drug, but an endogenous substance that only brings benefits without having any toxic side effects. In the EU, MSM is classified as a dietary supplement and not as a drug, so it is officially confirmed that MSM can be used safely.

Studies prove the success of MSM

14 osteoarthritis patients took part in a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. Eight received 2,250 mg of MSM daily (1,500 mg on an empty stomach in the morning after rising and 750 mg before lunch). Six acted as controls and took a placebo supplement. Of course, none of the patients knew whether they had received MSM or the placebo preparation.

A few days before the study, all participants had stopped taking their regular painkillers. It turned out that taking MSM provided tremendous relief from joint pain. The patients’ arthrosis symptoms subsided and the functionality of the musculoskeletal system increased.

After four weeks, the pain reduction measured in the MSM group averaged 60 percent. After an additional two weeks, patients taking MSM experienced an average improvement of as much as 80 percent, while pain relief within the placebo group was 20 percent.

In addition, the Department of Orthopedics at the University of California, San Diego, was able to determine that MSM has a positive effect on the cartilage structure of the knee joint and probably has a cartilage-building effect and supports the health of the joints and their functionality. If MSM is taken regularly, it is therefore assumed that cartilage degradation can be prevented.

The optimal combination: MSM and glucosamine

The combination of MSM and other natural remedies. B. glucosamine has also proven to be advantageous in studies: Here, an analgesic (pain-relieving) and anti-inflammatory (anti-inflammatory) effect is achieved in arthrosis. In conjunction with glucosamine, the cartilage is given structure and flexibility.

A clinical study from 2004 examined the effectiveness of the combination of MSM with glucosamine in osteoarthritis pain.

A group of 118 patients took either 1500 mg MSM or 1500 mg glucosamine or a combination of MSM and glucosamine daily for 12 weeks. There was also a placebo group.

Pain, inflammation, and swelling in the joints of the patient group were then measured at regular intervals. In the MSM group, a pain reduction of 52 percent was observed after 12 weeks, while the pain value in the glucosamine group even dropped by 63 percent.

However, the best result was achieved in the group that took MSM together with glucosamine: Here pain, inflammation, and swelling in the joints decreased by 79 percent.

MSM for osteoarthritis: the effects at a glance

MSM has a positive effect on joint health on very different levels:

  • MSM relieves pain.
  • MSM inhibits inflammation.
  • MSM has a decongestant effect.
  • MSM helps build cartilage and prevents cartilage degradation.
  • MSM promotes collagen formation and therefore ensures rapid regeneration of the connective tissue.
  • MSM has an antioxidant effect, i.e. it neutralizes those free radicals that would have a damaging effect on joint health.

So it’s worth trying. The dose of conventional painkillers can often be reduced as a result, so that there is also a lower risk of their side effects.

Of course, you can also combine MSM with glucosamine, as explained above.

MSM can not only be used internally. MSM in the form of MSM gel can be applied externally and massaged in, especially in the case of problems with the musculoskeletal system or back pain. In this way, MSM can work equally from the inside and outside.

MSM in allergies and asthma

If you suffer from allergies, asthma, or diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, MSM can also provide relief here. So you can kill several birds with just one stone!

DMSO for osteoarthritis

DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) could be used in the short term for painful arthrosis and provide relief. The agent is applied externally exclusively in the form of creams (pharmacy). We call DMSO at this point because MSM is a breakdown product of DMSO. However, since DMSO should not be taken internally, you can combine both: DMSO externally for a short time in the event of pain, and MSM internally.

Osteoarthritis diet plan

To make it particularly easy for you when it comes to nutrition, we have put together a sample three-day nutrition plan for osteoarthritis. During these three days, he will show you how our nutritional recommendations can be implemented. The nutrition plan contains three-day joint-healthy recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Of course, depending on the season, it is adapted to the types of vegetables and fruit that are available.
