It is necessary to understand the difference between the shelf life and the consumption period of products, experts say.

Foods such as yogurt, dried fruit, dried sausage, cheese, rice, pasta, and alcohol can be consumed even after their expiration date. A distinction should be made between the expiration date and the use-by date. The first case indicates that the product can be eaten. The use-by date applies to perishable foods such as raw meat, chicken, and fish. In this case, you must strictly adhere to the specified terms and not eat such products. This was stated by the Consumer Organization of Spain.

According to Spanish journalists, the expiration date indicates that the products have already lost their organoleptic properties, but they can still be eaten without health risks.

However, it is worth paying attention to the consumption period. Foods such as raw meat, chicken, and fish are perishable. Therefore, they should never be eaten after the specified dates have passed.

What foods can be consumed after the expiration date

  • Yogurt
  • Bread for toasting
  • Dried fruit
  • Dried sausage
  • Dried cheese
  • Canned tomatoes
  • Pasta
  • Chips
  • Rice
  • Beans
  • Soft drinks
  • Bakery and biscuits
  • Alcohol
  • Jams
  • Instant soups

What foods should not be consumed after the expiration date

  • Raw meat
  • Raw chicken
  • Raw fish

The Consumer Organization of Spain states that if pastries and bread begin to dry out, they can be used to make tiramisu, puddings, French toast, crackers, croutons, or garlic soup.

Before sausage products expire, they should be frozen. Cheese can also be frozen, but the low temperature makes it drier. The same rule applies to fruits and vegetables.

Experts believe that fresh vegetables and fruits that have begun to rot or become moldy should be eaten only after the damaged area has been removed with a large margin. You need to be careful: mold penetrates deep into the product and can release toxic substances that cause cancer and genetic changes.

Fresh meat and fish should either be frozen or cooked. You can cook them a day later if you subject the meat and fish to prolonged heat treatment beforehand.
