Ingredients for 4 servings:
- 3 large onions, red
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 9 tbsp water
- 3 small apples, peeled, chopped or grated
- 3 tbsp mayonnaise
- 100 ml sweet cream
- 5 small gherkins, finely chopped
Instructions

Mecklenburg style
Chop the onions. Place them in a covered bowl, sprinkle with 3 tablespoons of sugar, pour in the water, and stir well. Place in the refrigerator and let it sit overnight. The next day, drain the water (it’s enough to squeeze a little onto the surface of the onion mixture and drain it from the corner), add the mayonnaise and cream, as well as the chopped apples and gherkins. Stir, and then either enjoy immediately or let it sit for a while. The salad is very easy to prepare and, if kept refrigerated, still tastes very fresh even after two days. I find it most delicious with meatballs, schnitzel, or grilled meat. For me, the best part, though, is the salad and a thick slice of crispy, fresh bread…
