To properly open a pomegranate and avoid spilling the red juice, first roll it around on a cutting board under the palm of your hand, applying gentle pressure. After you have loosened the cores in this way, cut a few millimeters all around the shell. This works best with a serrated knife. Now place both thumbs in the incision site and pull the halves apart. It’s important not to damage the seeds when you cut open your pomegranate. Otherwise, the notorious juice will escape, which is difficult to remove. To open and core the pomegranate, use a bowl and a spoon. Hold one half, cut-side down, over the bowl, and tap the bowl with the spoon. The cores should now fall out. Opening a pomegranate: tips for pitting
What you want when you cut open a pomegranate are the bright red pips. They are edible. The pulp, on the other hand, is not. Our experienced expert also knows which parts of a pomegranate you can eat. If you open the pomegranate and then tap on the skin, some pulp will still stick to the pips. Put the pips in a bowl of water. There they sink to the bottom while the remaining components float to the surface. Now pour everything through a sieve. Finished.
Open the pomegranate correctly – the trick with the running water
If you want to open a pomegranate, you can cut off the top part first. To do this, start a little below the stalk and cut a maximum of five millimeters deep into the shell. Then pull off the upper end and you can now divide the pomegranate into four pieces along the lines of the flesh without cutting into the seeds. Another trick is to open a pomegranate underwater. Hold the halves or quarters over a tall bowl of water in the sink. Extract the seeds directly under the running water. That way, juice doesn’t splatter—and you can open a pomegranate without making a mess. Tip: The seeds can then be used for our avocado and pomegranate salad, for example.
