Cakey Buttermilk Donuts

Beat the eggs until frothy. Gradually add the sugar, then continue to mix with the softened butter and buttermilk until creamy. Mix the flour with the baking powder, salt, allspice, and mace. Sift over the mixture and fold in gently, but do not overmix. Refrigerate the finished dough for 20 minutes. Pour 5 cm of oil into a saucepan and heat to 180-190°C. While the oil is heating, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of 5 mm and cut out doughnuts of any size. Drop the doughnuts in batches into the hot oil and fry for 1.5 minutes on each side. Ensure the temperature does not drop. Dust the doughnuts with powdered sugar, if desired, and serve warm.
