Plant-based alternatives to cow’s milk are in vogue and more and more people are turning to oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, rice drink, etc. Pea milk is a vegan milk alternative that is still relatively unknown. We will introduce them to you in more detail.
What exactly is pea milk?
Whether for ethical reasons related to animal welfare, because they want to eat vegan or suffer from lactose intolerance: more and more consumers are turning to plant milk instead of cow’s milk. To be more precise, to plant drinks, because the designation vegan milk is illegal. Varieties made from soya, cereals such as oats and spelt, rice and almonds are particularly widespread. Pea milk, which came to us from the USA, is relatively new to the market. It is usually made from yellow peas and naturally has a protein content similar to that of cow’s milk. That’s why the drink is interesting for athletes and all those who want to eat a protein-rich diet.
The ingredients of pea milk
The taste of pea milk is similar to that of soy milk. In some cases, the manufacturers help with sugar and additives for a palate-friendly flavor, which can generally be the case with milk substitutes. Consumer associations therefore advise taking a close look at the list of ingredients. If you want to be sure that you are drinking a pure natural product or using it to prepare your lactose-free recipes, you can make the pea milk yourself. It is best to use yellow split peas, i.e. peeled half peas. Boil the legumes for about 45 minutes, rinse and place in a blender with fresh water and strain the liquid through a cloth. As a rule, the taste will not impress you, which is why you should add sweeteners and possibly flavoring agents such as vanilla to the blender. If you want to avoid sugar, you can use dates for sweetening, for example.
Is pea milk sustainable?
Since peas are vegan, they always do better than animal products in the ecological balance sheet. Keeping cows is resource-intensive. As a domestic legume, the raw material for pea milk has not had to travel long distances, as is sometimes the case with soy.
