Phosphate In Food: Is It Dangerous? Easily Explained

Phosphate – that’s what’s behind it

Many foods such as nuts, milk, cereals, or legumes contain natural phosphate. This usually does not harm the human body as long as there is no kidney disease. Of the natural phosphate, only slightly more than half of the amount absorbed enters the blood. The rest is excreted unprocessed.

  • Natural phosphate is generally very well utilized by the human body. However, one should not overdo it with natural phosphates either. This also applies if you are perfectly healthy and do not suffer from kidney disease.
  • The situation is completely different with the artificially added phosphate. In contrast to natural phosphate, almost 100 percent of the artificially added phosphate supplements are absorbed into the bloodstream and must be processed accordingly by organs.
  • As various studies have shown in the meantime, this phosphate, which is added in large quantities by the food industry, is not only dangerous for people with kidney disease. Even healthy people can become seriously ill if they overindulge in artificial phosphate supplements.
  • The problem is that almost all processed foods today, especially convenience foods and fast foods, contain large amounts of phosphate. The most effective way to avoid phosphate is, quite simply, to avoid it and switch to a healthy diet.
  • Additions of phosphate in food must be specified, but not in what quantity the substance is contained. In addition, artificial phosphates are often hidden behind a wide variety of E numbers. These include, for example, E338, E339, E340, E341, E343, E450, E451, E452 and E1410, E1412, E1413, E1414 and E1442.

The substance in food – it really is that dangerous

The food industry mainly uses artificial phosphate to make food last longer. Phosphate additives can also be found in foods that you would not normally expect to find.

  • There are a lot of artificial phosphates, for example, in drinks such as cola and processed cheese as well as slices and parmesan. Nutritionists have found that the addition of artificial phosphate in Parmesan alone has doubled in recent years. In addition, phosphate additives are added to meat products, coffee powder, processed milk, pudding powder, baking powder, and even baby food, among other things. Sometimes in an alarmingly high concentration.
  • For a long time, kidney patients in particular were conspicuous for health damage caused by phosphate intake. That has changed over the past few years. Studies show that even healthy people can suffer health damage from the intake of artificial phosphate.
  • The inner walls of the vessels can be damaged by the increased intake of artificial phosphate additives with food. This in turn often leads to cardiovascular problems and the risk of suffering a heart attack or a sleep attack increases.
  • Artificial phosphate can also accelerate the aging process of the skin and muscles.
The same goes for the bones since artificial phosphate binds too much calcium. Bones lack this calcium and the risk of osteoporosis increases.
  • If people with kidney disease consume too much artificial phosphate, they have a greatly increased risk of premature death.
