The name derives from the elongated shape of the tomato fruit. Other common names are egg or roma tomatoes. They are produced under the southern sun, which is why the aroma is very pronounced.
Origin
The tomato originally comes from South America and was brought to Europe by the Spanish explorers, where it established itself as the most popular vegetable.
Season
Plum tomatoes are harvested outdoors in summer and mostly z. B. processed into canned tomatoes. The main season for German tomatoes is from June to November.
Taste
Plum tomatoes always impress with their spicy, sweet, and sour taste and are a hit in salads due to their high proportion of pulp. The aroma of the plum tomato is very intense because it is mostly cultivated outdoors in southern countries.
Use
The pulp content of plum tomatoes is large, which is why this variety is well suited for cooking. The rather thick shell can be easily peeled off. This variety is suitable for use in soups, sauces or stews.
Storage
Like all other tomato varieties, plum tomatoes have a shelf life of about a week if they are stored properly. The temperature must not be too low, because plum tomatoes are sensitive to cold. The refrigerator is not ideal for storing plum tomatoes. The perfect temperature is 16 °C – this is how tomatoes retain their full aroma. Fresh tomatoes should be eaten within a week. If the plum tomatoes are not quite ripe yet, there is no problem in letting them ripen in the sun for a bit. Like apples, tomatoes release ethylene. This can cause other vegetables, like fruit, to wilt more quickly. It is therefore best to always store tomatoes and apples separately.
