Prepare Lentils Correctly – This is How it Works

How to prepare lentils

Lentils are the perfect vegetable, especially for vegetarians and vegans, because they have a high proportion of vegetable protein. In addition, the lens has a high iron and zinc content and some vitamins such as the B vitamin choline.

  • Basically, you should check the lenses for stones after you have washed them.
  • In contrast to many other legumes, however, you do not have to soak the lentils beforehand.
  • With the particularly large types of lentils, however, the cooking time is significantly reduced if you soak the legumes beforehand. To do this, pour about three times as much water as lentils into a bowl and leave it to stand for about four hours.
  • Then discard the water and use fresh water to cook the lentils.

How to cook lentils

Lentils are cooked at moderate temperatures to preserve the proteins.

  • The cooking time depends on the type of lentil. In general, it’s easy to remember that the darker the lentils, the longer the cooking time. In addition, the lens size naturally plays a decisive role.
  • Brown lentils take up to 40 minutes to cook, while light-colored lentils usually only take 10-20 minutes to cook. The exact cooking time can be found on the respective lentil pack.
  • Add the salt to the cooking water right away. Only add the vinegar and sugar when the lentils are almost done cooking.
  • Tip: You can also use a steam cooker to prepare the lentils very well.
