Radicchio – The Bitter Among The Salads

The radicchio belongs to the lettuce family and the daisy family. It is related to chicory and endive. Radicchio is about the size of an orange and weighs between 100 and 300 grams. The following varieties are widespread: di Chioggia (round and dark), di Treviso (long and dark), and di Verona (round and mild).

Origin

Radicchio comes primarily from the Italian region of Veneto. Today, radicchio is also grown in France, Holland, and Germany.

Season

Local outdoor radicchio is available from June to October and imported goods from October to May/June.

Taste

Radicchio tastes tart to slightly bitter.

Use

Radicchio is usually eaten raw and tastes best in a salad, mixed with mild lettuce and a strong salad dressing. But it is also an exceptional pleasure warm, steamed in wedges, fried or au gratin.

Storage

Wrapped in a damp cloth, it can be stored in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator for about 1 week.
