Ingredients for 10 servings:

  • 1 head of red cabbage
  • 2 onions
  • 200 ml oil
  • 200 ml vinegar – water mixture
  • 200 g sugar
  • Salt
  • possibly carrot(s)
  • possibly white cabbage

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Rest period approx. 1 day; Total time approx. 1 day 30 minutes

Recipe from Hungary

Finely grate the cabbage and onions and place them in a large bowl (preferably one with a lid). Mix together a mixture of vinegar and water (depending on your taste and the strength of the vinegar) and dissolve the sugar in it. Caution: The salad should be sweet, but not too sweet. I therefore recommend using about 100g of sugar first and adding more if necessary. Whisk it with the oil and pour over the cabbage and onions. Mix everything well. Season with salt and let it sit, covered, for about a day. Season again before serving. Option 1: The cabbage can also be mixed in proportion with white cabbage. Option 2: If you like, you can also finely grate in 1 or 2 carrots.
