an East Frisian specialty

Make a dough from flour, sugar, margarine, vanilla sugar, baking powder, and the egg. Line a springform pan with the dough and press the sides up to the top. Peel, core, and finely chop the apples, and transfer to the pan. Bring the apple juice and sugar to a boil. Mix some cold apple juice with the custard powder and stir this into the boiling apple juice until it thickens. Pour the custard over the apples and bake the cake at 175 degrees Celsius for 1 hour. Cover with parchment towards the end to prevent the cake from overcooking.
