Whether legs, armpits, or bikini area: regular shaving is one of the absolutely indispensable beauty rituals for most women.
Shave properly – step by step
First, check if your razor is still sharp. Because: Dull, worn blades cause unpleasant skin irritations such as redness or pimples more quickly, as you exert more pressure when shaving and have to touch it up more often. This puts unnecessary strain on the sensitive tissue.
Planning and preparing for the perfect shave
Preferably shave in the evening. This gives the skin the opportunity to recover from any micro-injuries overnight. This point is particularly useful in summer. Because: If the next day is a trip to the sea, the lake, or the pool, freshly shaved skin is not advisable, as it is more sensitive to the sun, salt and chlorine.
The last step in preparation: A peeling immediately before hair removal opens the pores and thus reduces the risk of ingrown hairs and strawberry legs.
This is how hair removal works smoothly
Whether you shave in the shower, the tub, or at the sink is of course entirely up to you. But: It is always advisable to work with warm water. The heat opens the pores, making the shave more precise. The moisture also softens the hairs, which makes it easier for the blade to slide over the skin.
Always use shaving foam, gel, or cream when removing hair. The fine-pored foam nourishes and protects the skin.
The following now applies to the legs: Work from the ankles towards the knees, i.e. against the direction of growth. The hair is cut particularly close to the root – the skin stays silky smooth for longer. However, do not pull the razor in one long line from bottom to top, as you could miss hairs. The shave will be more accurate and careful if you work your way up in short lines.
The following applies to the armpits: the direction of growth is not clearly discernible in this area of skin. In order to catch all the hairs, you work here with the razor several times – once horizontally, once vertically.
The following applies to the bikini zone: This skin area is very sensitive and easily irritated. To avoid pimples and redness, reapply shaving gel, foam, or cream from time to time. As with the armpits, it is usually necessary to shave both vertically and horizontally in order to get all the hair.
Aftercare – the right care after shaving
Treat the shaved areas with cold water after shaving. Carefully wash off any product residue. The cold also closes the pores, making them less susceptible to irritation. Then gently pat the skin dry and, in the last step, apply cream carefully. A product specially tailored to the needs of shaved skin is ideal. But you can also use simple, nourishing lotion. When it comes to armpits, be careful not to immediately apply an alcohol-based deodorant, as this would irritate the area.
By the way: If you discover an ingrown hair in the hours after the shave, carefully pluck it out with cleaned tweezers and then disinfect the area.
Shaving for the perfect tan – how to remove hair properly
Are you dreaming of a flawless summer tan? Then optimally depilated skin is a must for you. The reason: A shave acts on the tissue like a peeling. The blades gently remove dead skin cells, resulting in a more even tan on the surface. Your legs and arms will soon be radiant with an even, wonderfully flawless glow.
Good to know: If sunbathing turns out to be too intense, you should absolutely avoid shaving the irritated skin and give it at least a day to recover. You can find out how you can best protect your skin from the sun in advance in our guide on the subject of sun protection.
Support your skin with the right nutrition!
To keep your skin as supple and healthy as it is, you can pay attention to certain vitamins and trace elements in your diet. Many B vitamins and the trace elements zinc and iodine are involved in maintaining normal skin. For example, the delicious oat flakes in our porridge provide you with biotin (vitamin B7) and zinc for breakfast, as does the fish in our recipe for salmon with oven-roasted vegetables. Incidentally, the recipe is ideal as a light lunch or dinner on warm summer days. The mineral iodine, which is important for the skin, is mainly contained in sea fish, so feel free to try our recipe for fried pollack fillet.
Fruit, nuts, and vegetables are real superheroes for your skin
Fruits and vegetables such as grapefruit, blueberries, tomatoes, and broccoli are rich in vitamin C, which makes a lasting contribution to normal collagen formation. The protein collagen (also known as collagen) contributes to the normal function of the skin. Wholemeal baked goods, olives, and nuts are also important vital substances for the skin and provide you with sufficient vitamin E. Vitamin E helps to protect your cells from oxidative stress. A cell experiences “stress” when the normal repair and detoxification function is overwhelmed and damage can occur. Walnuts also provide zinc and iron: the former has an influence on the maintenance of normal nails, normal hair, and normal skin. For smooth, soft skin, not only is a perfect shave important, but also nutrition – try our delicious, healthy recipes.
Shaving on the go – practical tips
Whether it’s a short-term city trip, a long-planned vacation in the South Seas, or a camping trip in the wilderness: Sometimes you don’t have the opportunity to shave as usual with your usual beauty equipment in a familiar environment. So that the result is still optimal, we have a few simple tricks for you on the go:
Forgot your razor? No problem!
If you left your razor at home, use your partner’s wet razor or invest in disposable razors locally. However, make sure that these inexpensive utensils have more than one blade. Because: The more blades, the more precise and gentler the shave.
No shaving cream on hand? No problem!
If you forgot your shaving foam: use your conditioner or shower gel instead. These products also form a fine-pored foam on the skin, which is suitable for shaving.
Shaving without water? That’s how it works!
If there is no water nearby: Apply body lotion to the legs, armpits, or bikini area and slide the razor over the film. The lotion replaces water and foam in this improvised wet shave, nourishes and protects the skin, and thus minimizes the risk of injuries. Important: Use a product that is not too heavily perfumed. Fragrances irritate the skin. Ideally suited: A lotion with soothing ingredients such as panthenol.
