In general, this means small baked goods made of dough, which are produced by baking and roasting, among other things. In addition to small pastries such as croissants or croissants, there are also numerous fine baked goods, for example, muffins, American, snails, cream puffs, eclairs, and shortbread.
Origin
Although various forms of small baked goods have been known since ancient times, certain baked goods have special origin stories. Small pastries fried in fat are said to have been known in northern Germany as early as the 16th century. According to legend, the round yeast ball was invented in 1756 by a Berlin baker who wanted to use it to imitate cannonballs. And what is referred to as a muffin in this country should be more precisely called an “American muffin”. In contrast, English muffins are flat, yeast-based pastries that are eaten more like a bun. It is assumed that the British muffin, which was brought to North America by emigrants in the 19th century, was the template for the emergence of American muffins. After the invention of baking powder, these were prepared with a rather viscous dough that rises during baking. Similar to a bee sting sheet cake, for example, which is baked with a yeast dough.

Use
Sweet small baked goods can usually be eaten out of hand, so they are ideal for on the go, for example for a picnic or celebrations. So-called “cupcakes” are quite modern at the moment, these are muffin-like pastries made from a soft, sweet dough that are imaginatively decorated with cream, fruit and sugar decoration after baking and thus become small mini cakes. Americans with their smooth, large surface are also ideal for decorating. As mini americansmini americans they are especially good for parties or picnics. Sweet snails (yeast dough that is rolled out and covered with different fillings, rolled up and then cut into slices) are very common in Germany and are sometimes eaten for breakfast. What is referred to as Berliner in large parts of Germany is sometimes also called Berliner Pfannkuchen or just pancakes and refers to round balls of yeast dough that were usually filled with jam and fried. They are traditionally offered on New Year’s Eve and – like shortbread cookies – at carnival time.
Storage
If not filled with cream, the biscuits can be packed dry in a tin or aluminum foil. Otherwise, it should be kept cool.
