Already “morning” today? You’re probably thinking “Please what?”. In fact, behind the Swedish smorging there is nothing more than the good old and typical German snack. But the whole thing is a bit more complex, as we show you here.
(K) Old Swede: Smorging!
Many a food trend sounds pompous, but in the end it turns out to be solid home cooking. It’s the same with smorging, which comes to us as the latest culinary achievement from the land of Köttbullar and crispbread. Derived from the Swedish word “Smörgasbord”, which is made up of smörgas (bread and butter) and bord (table), nothing else is meant than the cold buffet with bread and all kinds of delicious toppings and side dishes. In Sweden, for example, the snack 2.0 includes salmon, sausage, meatballs, cheese snacks, vegetables, fruit and of course a selection of bread. But you can vary according to your mood and choose your own favorite appetizers for your smorging party.
Smorging recipes: It’s all about the look
As with any other party buffet, it is also important for smorging that the food is presented beautifully and in bite-sized form. Fanned out avocados, a pumpkin and vegetable spread in a pretty bowl, cucumber slices, diced mango, artfully cut radishes, shaped pieces of sausage … all of this is a feast for the eyes. If you want it to be quick, ready-made slices are recommended. A tricolore club sandwich with smoked trout, avocado and quark, for example, is not everyday fare and is pretty to look at. Plenty of suggestions and smorging recipes can be found on social media, where, for example, people on Instagram “smorgen” like crazy.
Smorging as you please
In an American guise, you can equip the “Butterbrottisch” with hearty muffins, mini burgers and chicken wings, while it has a Mediterranean touch with antipasti and tapas. If you want to make your smorging simple and less substantial, limit yourself to a few ingredients instead of a colorful mixture. Why not serve jacket potatoes with quark and a selection of other dips? Or a cheese platter with figs and grapes? The buffet for your smorging party can also have a motto, such as Oktoberfest. Then there are Bavarian specialties such as Obazda and pretzels on it. As you can see, smorging is basically just another word for something that has been around for a long time: enjoying a delicious selection of dishes in good company.
