Spreadable sausage during pregnancy – you should know that

Whether you can eat spreadable sausage when pregnant depends on how the sausage was made and processed.

  • Basically, you can eat the types of sausage that have been heated during production. These include, for example, liver sausage and pies. Alternatively, you should heat the spreadable sausage before consuming it.
  • The reason you shouldn’t eat raw meat products is because pathogens can spread in raw meat products. As long as a person has a strong immune system, there is nothing to prevent consumption. Due to pregnancy, however, the immune system is imbalanced and thus more susceptible to infections. In the worst case, these can harm the unborn child.
  • Raw foods can contain Listeria, Salmonella or Toxoplasma. Raw foods also include smoked fish, dried sausages such as salami, or products made from raw eggs or raw milk. However, if you heat the food to at least 70 degrees Celsius for at least two minutes before eating, the pathogens are all killed.

Liverwurst – that’s why you should be careful with this product

Although liverwurst is one of the cooked sausages, it should not be consumed in large quantities by pregnant women.

  • Liverwurst is made from liver and contains a lot of vitamin A. Although vitamin A is important for the skin, eyes and bone structure, it can be dangerous in an overdose. Vitamin A is dangerous because it is fat-soluble. Excessive amounts are deposited in fatty tissue and, in the worst case, can cause a cleft palate or skin and eye problems in the unborn child.
  • Therefore, only consume liver sausage in small quantities. When it comes to liver sausage, you should also make sure that you buy the sausage in one piece and cut it open yourself. Always store the food in the refrigerator, preferably in a clean and sterile glass box.
  • Apart from liver sausage, you should avoid tartare, mettwurst and all raw sausage types while you are pregnant. All boiled sausages are safe for consumption. These include Viennese sausages, bockwurst, white sausage and boiled ham.
