If you want to avoid carbohydrates, there are many different products that can serve as a substitute. With the help of these alternatives, you don’t have to feel like you have to give up anything and you can enjoy the food to the fullest.

Substitute for carbohydrates: How to do it

On a low-carb diet, you avoid carbohydrates. This is supposed to help you lose weight. But low-carb does not mean doing without:

  • If you are a fan of pizza, you can also enjoy this one without carbohydrates. Simply make a cauliflower base and top it with salami, spinach, broccoli or mozzarella according to your taste.
  • If you want to bake something, you will surely ask yourself which flour you can use. Almond flour, lentil flour and coconut flour are suitable for low-carb baking. You can use it to make pancakes, breads or other baked goods just like before.
  • When binding and thickening sauces, soups or creams, you can use locust bean gum or guar gum as low-carbohydrate alternatives to conventional flour or starch.
  • If you want to bread a schnitzel or something else, you can use sesame, for example. You can also use chopped peanuts or ground almonds for the breading.
  • While regular chips are packed with carbs, veggie chips are low in comparison. For example, roast carrot, beetroot or Jerusalem artichoke slices in the oven and enjoy them as a delicious snack.

More alternatives without carbohydrates

There is a wide range of low-carb alternatives to choose from. If you know which alternatives you can use, your menu will be much more colorful.

  • Finding low-carb alternatives for a sweet sandwich is not difficult: use a sugar-free jam, pure fruit or try making your own jam.
  • If you like it savory on bread, you could try hummus. This consists of sesame paste and chickpeas. The healthy spread provides you with fiber, iron, magnesium and zinc, among other things.
  • Vegetable noodles are a healthy alternative to pasta. Simply use a spiralizer to create spaghetti out of carrots or zucchini and serve with your choice of carb-free sauce.
  • There are also numerous alternatives for rice that you should try. Quinoa is a pseudocereal that provides you with lots of fiber, protein and minerals such as iron and magnesium.
  • If you are a fan of potatoes, you can replace them with cauliflower, for example. Especially in puree form, cauliflower can be a convincing substitute for potatoes.
  • Chia seeds are a filling breakfast that can replace oatmeal, for example. If you pour them with water or milk, they become a kind of gel, which fills you up for a long time and tastes particularly delicious topped with a few berries.
