Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1 kg beef, cut into cubes
  • 50 ml olive oil
  • 750 g onion(s), quartered
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 125 ml red wine, dry
  • 1 stalk(s) cinnamon
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tbsp vinegar (red wine vinegar)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • Salt
  • 2 tbsp raisins
  • 350 ml meat broth
  • Pepper from the mill
  • possibly water if needed

Instructions

Working time approx. 25 minutes; Total time approx. 25 minutes

casserole dish

Heat the oil in a large pot and sear the meat. Remove the meat, then fry the onions in the same pot for about 5 minutes until golden brown. Add the garlic, red wine, spices, meat broth, and finally the meat. Cover and simmer everything together for about 1-1.5 hours, until the meat is tender and the sauce has become slightly thick (add a little more water if necessary). Shortly before the end of the cooking time, add the raisins and let simmer for a few more minutes. Finally, remove the cinnamon stick and bay leaf and serve. Serve with boiled potatoes, rice, or bread. Tip: If you don’t feel like searching through the spices afterwards, you can put the cinnamon stick, bay leaf, and cloves in a tea strainer, seal the lid, and let it cook with the sauce. This can be easily removed at the end.
