Store Sprouts Correctly: You Should Pay Attention to This

You cannot keep sprouts for long, as they are among the perishable foods. Find out what you need to know about the shelf life of sprouts in this nutrition tip.

Keep sprouts only for a short time

Whether bought or grown in a home -made sprout jar – sprouts should be eaten fresh.

  • If you don’t use sprouts right away, you can store them in the fridge for a short time.
  • However, the usual refrigerator temperature of 8 degrees is not enough. At this temperature, germs multiply on the sprouts.
  • If you want to store the sprouts in the fridge, reduce the temperature to at least 4 degrees. This is the only way sprouts can be kept for a maximum of 7 days.

Sprouts can go bad

Before eating, you should check if the sprouts are still good.

  • Rely on your senses. If the sprouts smell unpleasant, it is best to dispose of them.
  • The same applies if the sprouts no longer look good and have brown spots or are greasy.
  • Even if the sprouts are still fine, rinse them before eating. This is best done under running water in a fine sieve.
