Keep sprouts only for a short time
Whether bought or grown in a home -made sprout jar – sprouts should be eaten fresh.
- If you don’t use sprouts right away, you can store them in the fridge for a short time.
- However, the usual refrigerator temperature of 8 degrees is not enough. At this temperature, germs multiply on the sprouts.
- If you want to store the sprouts in the fridge, reduce the temperature to at least 4 degrees. This is the only way sprouts can be kept for a maximum of 7 days.
Sprouts can go bad
Before eating, you should check if the sprouts are still good.
- Rely on your senses. If the sprouts smell unpleasant, it is best to dispose of them.
- The same applies if the sprouts no longer look good and have brown spots or are greasy.
- Even if the sprouts are still fine, rinse them before eating. This is best done under running water in a fine sieve.
