This is how you can store your red cabbage

Before storing, you should first remove coarse dirt from the red cabbage by hand or with a dry cloth.

  • The optimal place for storage is dry, dark, and cool.
  • You can keep a fresh head of red cabbage in the refrigerator for a maximum of four weeks. Then it withers.
  • For storage in the basement or over the winter in the garden shed, place the heads in wooden boxes lined with newspaper and cover them with jute fabric. Avoid removing the outer leaves unless they are damaged.
  • These leaves serve to protect the cabbage.
  • If stored in boxes, it is possible that the cabbage will rot. Therefore, check the heads regularly and turn them over from time to time.
  • It is even better if you store the red cabbage hanging. To do this, wrap the stalk of the head with packing tape and attach it to a taut rope. The advantage of hanging storage is that the heads do not rot.
  • Whether in boxes or hanging – as long as no mold forms, the cabbages stay fresh for up to six months at a temperature of around 2 °C.
  • Alternatively, you can freeze red cabbage and make it last even longer.
