Store spinach in the refrigerator for only a few days

Fresh spinach is very delicate and will wilt quickly.

  • If you cannot use the spinach on the day of purchase, it will stay fresh in the refrigerator for two to four days if stored properly.
  • It is important that you handle the delicate leaves with care. So when transporting it home from the store, be careful not to crush the spinach.
  • By the way: If you have the choice between leaf spinach and root spinach, you should opt for the latter variant. With root spinach, the leaves keep fresher better.
  • The correct storage place in the refrigerator is the vegetable compartment.
  • Wrapping the spinach in a damp cloth will delay wilting a little.

Freezer Storage – Freeze spinach

As already mentioned: fresh and not frozen, spinach does not keep for long. However, if you freeze spinach, you can keep it in the freezer for up to a year.

  • To keep the vegetables bright green, blanch the spinach for two minutes and then cool in ice water.
  • The leaves must be dry before freezing. So dry the spinach carefully. You can use a salad spinner and then dab the leaves with paper towels.
  • Put the spinach in portions in freezer bags. Squeeze out the air before sealing the bag and write the freezing date on the bag.
  • As mentioned, you can freeze spinach for up to a year. However, after about half a year not only the color and taste are lost, but also the healthy vitamins of the vitamin bomb spinach.
