You can find substitutes for rice vinegar among the different types of vinegar found in European cuisine. Balsamic vinegar or champagne vinegar is good for Japanese dishes. Because they imitate the mild taste of rice vinegar. However, only use a small amount of the alternatives as rice vinegar is much milder.

  • Light balsamic vinegar is the best substitute for rice vinegar due to its inherently mild flavor. White balsamic vinegar is low in acidity. It is therefore a perfect alternative.
  • You can also safely use dark balsamic vinegar. The vinegar aroma is more intense here but still comes quite close to rice vinegar.
  • If you mix apple cider vinegar and white wine, you will also have almost the same aroma as that of rice vinegar. Take a step back from the apple cider vinegar. Otherwise, the mixture will be too acidic.
  • Another substitute is champagne vinegar. You can use this if you don’t mind a slight alcohol note.
  • You can also mix up a substitute for rice vinegar yourself. Mix some soy sauce and wine or apple cider vinegar and add a little more seasoning if you like. If the taste is too intense for you, add water.
