Cooking rice in the microwave – that’s how it works

White, i.e. peeled, rice such as basmati or jasmine rice is best suited for preparation in the microwave. You can also cook whole grain rice in the microwave, but the cooking time will be considerably longer. That’s how it works:

  • Place the desired amount of rice in a microwave-safe bowl and add the appropriate amount of water. The rule of thumb is: For one part of rice, add one and a half times the amount of water.
  • Close the jar with a lid and put it in the microwave at 700 watts. The cooking time depends on the amount of rice you want to cook: 1/2 cup rice takes 9 minutes, 3/4 cup rice takes 12 minutes and 1 cup rice takes about 16 minutes.
  • You can also season the rice before cooking. Simply add some salt and a stick of butter to the rice. If you forgot to season, that’s no problem: you can also refine the cooked rice.
  • By the way, the rice gets a little more flavor if you cook it with vegetable broth instead of water.
